Candidates for the Amazon Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship (RME) can find the barriers to their success very challenging.
The most challenging of all stages of the screening process for the RME is the Ramsay Test, developed to appraise the candidate’s mathematical, mechanical, and verbal analysis skills.
Moreover, this Amazon assessment is strictly timed, which makes it even more challenging.
Taking the Amazon RME Test? Learn how you can boost your score
This page contains an overview of the Amazon RME Ramsay Test, including an explanation of each section as well as sample questions.
This will allow you to maximize your chances of getting into the Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship.
The Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship is an Amazon training program for both Amazon employees and other candidates that intend to eventually be Mechatronics Junior Technicians at Amazon.
This program is composed of a 12-week course followed by a twelve-month apprenticeship guided by senior MJTs. Amazon pays for the entire length of the program.
After reading the instruction, you will be given 102 minutes to complete the test.
This Amazon-conducted test ensures that candidates possess the basic verbal, mechanical, and mathematical aptitude to join Amazon’s RME (Reliability Maintenance Engineering) team.
Unlike the Amazon Ramsay Test, sometimes called a ‘Ramsay Test’ intended for maintenance roles, the MRA Ramsay Test does not evaluate pre-existing professional knowledge or experience in the field.
You should not, however, conclude that you don’t need to practice or study for the test!
If you wish to pass the test with a high score, we recommend using a dedicated

Below are examples of questions you can expect to encounter:
Arithmetic skills are, of course, an integral part of studying in an intensive course such as that included in the MRA apprenticeship.
Candidates should practice basic mathematics concepts such as percentages, fractions, and the basic operations of arithmetic.
Numerical questions may include fractions, graphs, and electrical theory questions.
The correct answer is C – 1.05 million. This can be ascertained by adding 250,000 pounds in donations to the revenue from traffic in July (which can be easily calculated to be 800,000 pounds).
The Arithmetic section contains 20 questions, which the candidate must complete in 30 minutes.
For most people, answering 20 arithmetics questions in 30 minutes is a bit tough without preparation – particularly when they are not permitted to make use of a calculator.
The test contains two types of electricity questions – troubleshooting and electrical theory questions.
You can calculate the branch currents by means of Ohm’s law: I = V/R
Where several components are hooked up in parallel, the voltage across their ends is the same. By simple division we can therefore arrive at the correct answer 5: 2: 4.
To answer questions like these you must have a clear knowledge of the basic concepts of electrical theory.
Candidates for the MRA apprenticeship are expected to have a solid grasp on these subjects.
Studying in advance is a surefire way to improve your grade and help you beat out the competitors.
While the apprenticeship is intended to turn the candidate into an expert in mechanics, Amazon doesn’t expect candidates to be experts when they start out – after all, if they were already experts, they would not need the program!
For this reason, the mechanical section of the test focuses on the candidate’s basic mechanical aptitude.
Many questions in this section deal with cogwheels and slopes. For example:
When two cogwheels interlock, the direction in which they rotate reverses, that is to say, the second gear spins in the direction opposite to the first gear. If we count the gears, we can easily figure out in which direction each gear will spin.
From this we can conclude that the gears will move the rack up.
If this question seems complicated, rest assured: the more you practice, the easier you will find answering the questions to be.
This section of the assessment is different from the previous sections. Here you will need to read long, boring text segments to find the relevant information. Buckle up!
If you pay attention, you will notice that important words in the question and answer are reworded or repeated from the passage:
The text questions can seem intimidating and even tiresome, but they are a major element of the assessment.
In the RMA test, you will be given one minute to answer each question – 24 minutes in total, 4 questions per text segment.
After practicing, you will start getting gradually acquainted with this question format, and it will become less intimidating.
Locating relevant information in a large text is an acquired skill just like the arithmetical and mechanical skills you will need for other segments.
It’s true that the RMA test is fairly challenging. A high grade in every section is required to move on to the next stage of the process. So practice is key to your success.
Note: Test topics also include troubleshooting, object inspection, process flow, basic measurements and spatial cognition.
The key to success in the test is to be prepared in advance. Only candidates with the best grades will probably be able to move on to the next stage of the process, so it’s best to be ready.
The Mechatronics and Robotics Apprenticeship assessment lasts 102 minutes, and comprised of 4 parts:
This assessment requires a high level of math and mechanical aptitude. Applicants that are not used to these sorts of tasks are likely to find the assessment to be challenging at best.
Both the apprenticeship and the Mechatronics Junior Technician job are well compensated. During the 12-week course you will be paid $16.5 per hour, which will later be raised to $21.30 when you are back in the FC.
After working as a Mechatronics Junior Technician for a year, many candidates will receive a raise.
The total process takes 15 months, including a 3-month course followed by a year of apprenticeship to a senior MJT.
